M - Discuss '1984' ... please watch the video above. This is actually two layers of 'spoofing.' The above political ad endorsing Barack Obama was an actual commercial that Apple Computers ran in the mid-80s introducing the world to their product. They were using the symbolism of IBM being like the Party and their computers were the change needed in society. The commerical is considered one of THE most famous commercials of all time.
(HW Due: '1984' questions ... Read 'Everyday Use' and answer questions)
W - Discuss 'Everyday Use' for characterization, theme, and tone. Create tone posters/vocab words.
(HW: Read "Gooseberries" by Chekov ... NO questions)
F - Analyze Chekov's short story for symbolism, tone, irony, etc.
(HW: Read first four chapters of Part II in '1984')

I watched the original commerical and it was actually quite frightening, but I think that's why the ad might've been so popular and effective ... I love advertising and communications, if I wasn't so passionate about the arts I think I might like to go into that as a possible career. Out of today's commercials there aren't very many that are politcally driven to the point that the Mac commercial was, but all all of them aren't just sex sells either. Some of the most mermorable commercials of our generation in my opinion are the Mastercard commercials. That "one hotdog at the game, $2.50, spending a day with Dad, priceless." bullcrap. All very well crafted ploys to get you to think, well hey, that was clever and oh so true we should apply for Mastercards. Advertisement is split into two sectors, A: Intelligent and B: Mindless. I really can't remember where I was going with that thought but I think I've answer the QOTW to it's entire extent. :)
Thanks for following through with this!
After years and years of countless hours watching commercial after commercial it's surprising that I'm drawing a complete blank on this question... I'd have to agree with Jess that not every commercial today is made with a "sex sells" attitude (although it certainly seems that way a majority of the time). Every now and again there are a few clever or original commercials, but I can't recall a specific example that is comparable to the 1984-esque commercial.
